Upscale Shopping in Malibu

Malibu has more than its share of residents and visitors who are rich and/or famous. As real estate prices have skyrocketed in recent years, older residents who leave are replaced by new families far wealthier than those they replace. These trends are reflected in Malibu's shopping as a steady increase in the percentage of stores catering to the upscale retail shopper. Some in Malibu are fearful that there will be a multitude of places to buy "a $200 t-shirt" and no place to buy a hammer or a nail. This trend accelerated in 2008 as leases were renewed in Cross Creek Shopping Plaza. A new owner had to dramatically raise rents to cover increased property taxes, driving out some of the smaller tenants.

Cross Creek/Malibu Country Mart Shops

General website for Malibu Country Mart at this link. All stores in the west low-rise section of Malibu Country Mart have the address 3835 Cross Creek Rd. Stores in the west high-rise section have the address 23410 Civic Center Way. Stores in the east section have the address 3900 Cross Creek Road. The Cross Creek Center partially shares the parking lot with the east section of Malibu Country Mart and stores have individual addresses. Stores will have a suite number where they share an address.

Malibu Lumber Yard

In 2008, renovations began to turn the old Malibu Hardware property (Cross Creek Road near PCH) into an upscale shopping center. By early 2009, work was almost done but delays were encountered due to a slow economy and wastewater issues. High end tenants finally moved in for an opening in April 2009. Tenants include clothing stores Planet Blue Kids, J. Crew, James Perse, Alice & Olivia, Kitson, Maxfield, Theory and Tory Burch, home store Andrianna Shamaris and the Crumbs Bake Shop. Restaurants and more shopping will complete the roster as the build-out is finished and all space is leased.
